Have people interacted with Pacific Islander culture in San Diego?
I asked people around Point Loma Nazarene University if they've ever interacted with Pacific Islander culture in San Diego. Here's what they had to say.

A Marshallese tradition that preserves culture off-island
There are about 300 Marshallese people in San Diego. More than 4,000 miles away from their home islands, one of the ways they maintain their culture in San Diego is a custom called “kemem” — a baby’s first birthday.
In a city as diverse as San Diego and home to many ethnic communities, the Marshallese are a particularly small group.

Students from Hawaii grapple with distance during Oahu flooding
Hawaii experienced its worst flooding in more than 20 years, after several back-to-back storms — called kona lows — hit Oahu island. Hard-hit areas, including the North Shore, are suffering the most, with millions of dollars in damage and thousands of evacuations.
Mikayla Yuen’s family woke up on March 13 to their house filled with six inches to a foot of water. She is now navigating what it’s like to be away from home during this tragedy, as her seven family members have evacuated to a nearby house with elevation.
Hawaii organizations and residents have come together to help the community. They ask for donations.

Government shutdown leaves military students in limbo
For my broadcast journalism class, I pitched a story and produced a TV package about the federal government shut down in 2025. I spoke with military students at Point Loma Nazarene University who were affected as well as an official about the university's challenges.
As editor in chief of the university newspaper, it was my goal to apply national news to our campus — this is one of those examples. All footage was shot by me.

‘We grew up working here’: Chuck E. Cheese to close in Pearl City after more than 30 years
During my internship at Hawaii News Now, one of three Chuck E. Cheese locations on Oahu closed. I got to report on the thoughts of the owners, employees and community, who have a personal connection to the location.
I conducted all the interviews and edited a practice news package.

Hawaii Foodbank Drive aims to help those in need despite federal funding cuts
The annual Hawaii Foodbank Drive collects food and cash donations to support families in need. I went to three of the locations on Oahu with a photojournalist to shoot b-roll and conduct interviews for the Hawaii News Now shows.

Point Loma Nazarene University rallies to support North Shore surfer after tragic accident
During my internship at Hawaii News Now, I reported on the story of North Shore surfer, Dakota Briley, who was recovering from a tragic accident. I edited the package, and it was aired on July 5.
While the story was being covered across the island, I wanted to tell a different one: how his small religious university in San Diego, Calif., was supporting him.

U.S. Army Purple Heart veteran forced to self-deport to South Korea
My first news package during my internship at Hawaii News Now is about a Hawaii man who was forced to self-deport after 48 years in the U.S., despite almost losing his life while serving in the military.
I shadowed the interview, helped write the TV script, which aired on June 23, and co-wrote the web story.
I taught myself how to use the station's editing software, Edius, to form my own package. I recorded a voice-over, using my original script.
